An existing top story flat in San Francisco's Marina District is transformed from a warren of awkward rooms to a series of refined spaces linked by a 50 foot long pearwood spine. This link, stretching from entry landing to flat's end, shifts and wraps to both reveal and hide renovated service spaces, material cues, and formal maneuvers. A common language of flush and recessed details is shared by renovated spaces and surfaces which are carefully juxtaposed with the remaining, more classically detailed rooms.
