An existing Fifth Avenue penthouse, immediately opposite New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art, was transformed into a residence of distinct and formal rooms with Fin de Siecle Vienna, and Joseph Hoffman, and Adolf Loos specifically, as the inspiration. In Hoffman's words, the apartment becomes both "an old-style palace and new age industrial machinery for living."
The exterior terraces on both sides of the unit expand the space outward. Textures, finishes, and color all played a role in making the space appear more appropriate to its expensive Upper East Side context.
