The Marine Mammal Center and Pier 39 together asked MH/A to look at the idea of enhancing the visitor experience for viewing the sea lions. Wind, crowds, a hidden location, and the constraints of a limited viewing space adjacent a fire access lane, were a few of the design issues tackled in the process of developing a vertical viewing platform which announced itself to the larger Fisherman's Wharf audience. Capped by vertical windmills, to power the lighting and signage for the viewing area, the project attempts to enhance a required stop for the average San Francisco tourist in a way that is respectful to the animals, educational for the visitor, and net positive for the on-going commercial entity within which it sits.
