Responding to an acute need for affordable housing for its students, CCAC--now known as California College of the Arts (CCA)--constructed its first dedicated dormitory. Adjacent to the idyllic Oakland campus, the new building acts as a strong edge to the campus as well as a transitional element between the commercial / institutional texture to the west and the residential condition to the east. The 14,000 sf parcel is built out with a two story concrete podium housing a 38 car parking structure and the building lobby. A three story wood structure above houses 124 beds in 64 bedrooms. Lounges and kitchens are in an attached object building.
